Glasgow Pride 2018
What better way to celebrate the summer with one of Scotland’s most colourful events? Celebrating all aspects of LGBTI culture with an ethos of acceptance and love for all, the festival is true hit with city-folk and visitors alike. The event gets bigger each year and 2018 is set to be no exception. With a new family area and expanding Youth Zone, Glasgow Pride is well worth a visit. We’ve rounded up a few high points to look out for and, of course, welcome you to round-off your visit with a stay at our residence, the Kelvingrove Hotel, which is within easy reach of public transport, ready to whisk you away to a weekend of merriment on Glasgow Green.
One of the things Glasgow Pride is best known for is its main stage acts which will be entertaining the crowds all day and night long. This year, international superstar Mel C, of Spice Girls fame, will be doing the serenading, supported by the likes of Lasgo vs. Ian van Dahl, popular drag act, The Sundaes, and DJ George Bowie.
On the 14th of July you’ll see Glasgow city centre come alive with the sights and sounds of 5,000 people taking to the streets to celebrate and support LGBTI culture. Previous participants have included Asda, Tesco, the Gay Police Association and Stonewall, plus of course a whole host of everyday folk who want to show their appreciation. It’s one the most colourful, vibrant and unflinchingly positive sights you’ll see in Glasgow each year – even our often-dull weather won’t put these lot off! So, get your whistle and your rainbow flag at the ready and join in the fun.
Selling Festival essentials like flags, whistles and, inevitably, rain ponchos, the Pride Market is the place to spend your pennies when you’re not hitting the bar or riding the dodgems. There’ll also be official Pride merchandise onsale, so you can sport your 2018 t-shirt at next year’s festival to show continued support for the cause.
It’s not all about getting tipsy and dancing your socks off you know! The Family Area at Pride has shown itself to be a super-popular zone. Featuring child-only toilets, baby-changing facilities and seated picnic area, this smoke and alcohol-free section of the Green is the perfect place for you and your family to celebrate the LGBTI cause without being surrounded by too many merrymakers.
Okay, not strictly part of the main event but worth a look none the less! After-parties take place at a range of clubs and bars throughout the city and are bound to be occasions full of excitement and a little rowdiness! Polo Lounge hosts one of the best after-parties going but be sure to check out Katie’s Bar and AXM too for reasonably priced drinks and fantastic music sets.
Phew! We think that’s quite enough for one weekend, don’t you? Glasgow Pride is a true highlight in the city’s event calendar and we know first-hand what an amazing experience it can be. Choose the Kelvingrove Hotel as your base to get some of the best rates around and friendly, knowledgeable staff on-hand to help.
