Celtic Connections: Everything You Need To Know
Celtic Connections is the UK’s premier celebration of Celtic music and attracts thousands of visitors to Glasgow each and every year. In 2019, the festival will host 2,100 artists across 300 events and 20 venues – talk about big numbers! It’s also the largest winter music festival of its kind, so it’s no wonder people come from across the globe to enjoy the atmosphere.
We’re super excited about the line up this year, so much so that we’re celebrating with a Celtic Connections discount deal – just head over to our deals blog to find out more! With so many performances to choose from, it’s easy to get bogged down in the detail so read on to find a little inspiration from our top picks.
Brave in Concert
The classic Disney fantasy film is set to be screened at Glasgow’s Royal Concert Hall while the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra provide live accompaniment, playing Patrick Doyle’s iconic original score. Truly an event to make your hairs stand on end, there will also be appearances from the likes of Jim Sutherland and Lorne MacDougall, who helped voice characters in the film.
Roaming Routs Revue: 50 Years of The Beatles’ Abbey Road
This is a must-see for any discerning Beatles fan. The 2019 festival sees the final 17 tracks recorded by the British band celebrated with a full-scale orchestra. Also joining the party are stars such as KT Tunstall, The Staves and You Tell Me, who will be performing their pick of the album along with their own material.
We’ve chosen this one not just because of the musical talent on display but for the cracking choice of venue too. The Drygate boasts a delicious menu and over 200 beers, IPAs and porters. Gary Innes is a Highland born accordionist who brings a touch of the wilds of Scotland to his playing. Having picked up the accordion at age eight, Gary’s talent for traditional Scottish music shines on stage, and if you’re looking for an authentic experience, we don’t think they come much better than this.
It’s not all Scots-centric music at next year’s Celtic Connections. Catch a few ditties from over the pond at Transatlantic Sessions – the live version of original TV series – and get your toes tapping to tunes from some of the best American singers, songwriters and musicians on the Celtic music scene today.
Finally, it’s not Celtic Connections without a few exclusive events on the bill. Catch the final of BBC Radio Scotland’s Young Traditional Musician of the Year 2019 at the City Halls, where you can be among the first to spot the future Next Big Thing. Or bag yourself tickets to the Festival Club at the Art School. Taking place on various dates throughout the festival, you’ll see exclusive, intimate performances from artists across the program, and find yourself rubbing shoulders with some of the music world’s elite.
